Lot Photo Description Realized
Lot 2124
1907. High Relief, Roman Numerals, Wire Rim. PCGS graded MS-64. A fantastic example of one of the most beautiful coin designs in United States and World numismatics. Saint-Gaudens' stunning portrayal of Liberty is struck up in full, high relief on this lovely specimen. Liberty's dress detail is immaculate and her legs are missing any mentionable nicks. The luster is uninterrupted as it flows freely across the fields and across the devices. Magnification reveals interwoven circles of light die polish; these raised circular die lines are seen on only the finest examples with surface preservation of the highest degree. For identification, a single tiny black spot is mentioned under Liberty's outstretched arm near the olive branch.

This beautiful coin issue was the result of work by Augustus Saint-Gaudens at the request of President Theodore Roosevelt. Roosevelt felt strongly about bringing beauty back to America's coinage that he felt was boring and nowhere near the distinction of many Ancient Greek coin designs. Through all of the ensuing problems Saint-Gaudens and Roosevelt endured from the political sewing circle of the time, the project was successful and finally approximately 11,250 High Relief examples were produced in 1907. This quantity of High Relief examples was sufficient enough to satisfy Roosevelt but also enough to cause mint officials to complain about the negative effect of their difficult-to-produce design. Lower relief dies with Arabic numerals were subsequently produced and the mass production of "Saints", as we know them as today, began in full force. Out of the estimated mintage figure of 11,250 pieces, there are two varieties struck from the same dies, Flat Rim (Edge) and Wire Rim (Edge) -- this coin. The Flat Rim examples are substantially more scarce, probably on an order of 2-3x as the more common Wire Rim (PCGS # 9135) .
Estimated Value $24,000 - 25,000.

Lot 2125
1907. Flat Relief, Arabic Numerals. NGC graded MS-66. The modified design with the lower relief addressed the practical issues for coinage while the immense beauty of the High Reliefs struck earlier in the year stand as a testament to Saint-Gaudens' original concept. The present coin is unusually nice in quality, with outstanding surfaces for this date. A loupe will find a stray scuff, but overall, the eye appeal remains strong. Pop 95; 44 finer (PCGS # 9141) .
Estimated Value $3,500 - 3,800.

Lot 2126
1907. Flat Relief, Arabic Numerals. PCGS graded MS-65. Both sides are covered with frosty mint luster and pink highlights at the centers. This is a lovely Gem that also sports sharp striking detail. The 1907 "Arabic Numerals" double eagle represents the Mint's replacement format for the MCMVII High Relief double eagles of the same date. The new, flatter relief allowed bankers to stack the coins easier than those with the High Relief style. The production was stepped up enormously as the new design took much less effort to strike than the MCMVII pieces which often took several blows of the dies to fully bring out Saint-Gaudens' original design. Gems of the Arabic Numerals style are elusive but not rare (PCGS # 9141) .
Estimated Value $3,000 - 3,200.

Only slightest scuffs can be found on the reverse, the obverse is of full Gem quality (PCGS # 9141) .

Lot 2130
1909-S. PCGS graded MS-65. Well struck with light patina. A lustrous and well preserved Gem that has hues of pale reddish-orange color. This date is one of the more common in Mint State, generally available in grades up to, and including the MS-63 level. In Choice and finer grades, however, this issue still remains elusive. Softly frosted with pleasing cartwheel effects, the surfaces show a few very tiny abrasions. Both sides are well produced with sharp design and freedom from weakness. Pop 327; 18 finer, 7 in 65+, 10 in 66, 1 in 67 (PCGS # 9153) .

1911. PCGS graded MS-65. A very scarce date as a Gem. Rich peach-golden toning overlays each side with traces of sky-blue at selected border areas. Satiny metal flow enhances the billowing mint frost giving the coin a shimmering, highly impressive appearance. The original mint brilliance is only interrupted by an occasional hint that it is anything but perfect. In many ways, the strike is almost more important than the mint bloom on a 1911 Philly Mint double eagle. Sheer boldness of strike furnishes us another positive attribute and something for bidders to appreciate and ponder. This will be a treat simply to view this lot, the new owner will truly have a prize. Pop 42; 12 finer, 1 in 65+, 8 in 66, 2 in 66+, 1 in 67. (PCGS # 9157) .

1922. PCGS graded MS-65. Bright honey-gold color bursts from original surfaces unmarred by tarnish or spotting. A strong strike shows as well, making this a desirable Gem quality specimen. Not even a trace of soft detail shows at the date, where sometimes weakness occurs. Pop 1,324; 16 finer, 8 in 65+, 8 in 66 (PCGS # 9173) .
